Lessons from Stake Priesthood Leadership Meeting

03/02/2010

As reported by my brother:

I learned at Stake Priesthood leadership meeting that we can increase our spirituality by gleaning insights from the biographies of BYU football players.

I also learned that you shouldn’t make gagging noises during Stake Priesthood leadership meeting if the bishop is sitting behind you.

Yea, it is true, Brother Bosworth. We *can* increase our spirituality by gleaning insights from the lives of BYU football players.

As I have stated in the past: “All of us living in the world today need points of reference—even models to follow. . . Learning of others who trusted God and followed His teachings whispers to our souls, ‘Be still, and know that I am God.’ As they resolutely kept His commandments and trusted in Him, they were blessed. When we follow their examples, we too will be similarly blessed. . . Each one becomes a model to follow.”

    Meh.

Actually, Scott, Football in the west is a lone and dreary sport, fallen if you will. The One True Conference is the SEC, so I suggest you take your spiritual cues from Urban Meyer or Nick Saban.

    Always happy to help.

Our stake priesthood meeting on Sunday was about the three boys who carried the Martin handcart saints over the river and died thereafter.

Of course, they didn’t carry everyone over the river, there were more than three, and they lived long and productive lives. Sigh.

    Mark,
I’m trying to understand how that relates here.

Had I been your bishop sitting behind you, I would have gagged along with you…

What would we increase if we gleaned insights from the lives of Utah State football players? Our empathy?

    Gaggie

(Haha .. Gaggie … get it? GET IT?? … oh c’mon)

Good one, Gaggie. Yeah, empathy and/or depression.

On Superbowl Sunday my ward got out 20 minutes before the game was supposed to start. A member of the Stake Presidency was in attendance and our Elders Quorum President at the end of the lesson asked if he wanted to say a few words. The Stake Presidency member replied, “I think that I’d get lynched if I started rambling. Anyway, go home and watch the Super Bowl. The Book of Mormon teaches that we have covenanted to succor those that stand in need of succoring (At the waters of Mormon), and since Austin Collie is a member we should watch the game to keep the covenants of the church…

In my last Stake Priesthood leadership meeting, a speaker quoted a (former) Utah football player. I heard enough groans to fuel a truckload of Y whining. I have never felt the spirit so strong.

Don’t ever attend the Pioneer Park Ward in Provo. You’ll get more of this stuff than anywhere else. Just saying, from experience. :)
